We talk about banning straws to reduce plastic—but the average pad can be made up of 90% plastic, meaning one pad can contain as much plastic as four plastic bags. Keeping that in mind, approximately 20 billion menstrual products are dumped yearly in the U.S. alone. It’s a curious thing that menstrual products aren’t often included in the discussion, despite the ludicrous amount of environmental damage both the creation and disposal of them causes.
Okay, let’s admit it. Being good to the planet is damn hard. We’ve grown up in a consumerist society that normalises—no, encourages—spending. We’ve become so accustomed to that instant buzz of buying new, shiny things.
So, let’s catch up on a few things. The Earth is heating up to the point of no return, the ice is melting, the polar bears have nowhere to live, we need to save the turtles and to make things worse, it’s all our fault and our politicians don’t care. Woah.
