As someone of Persian and Fijian–Indian ethnic descent, hair oiling was a common and normal practice in my household growing up that was performed by my Nani (grandma) on the weekends.

Even though she couldn’t speak much English, and I couldn’t understand Hindi, these little ritualistic acts of affection helped bridge the gap between us in a way that language failed to.

They own a wardrobe that resembles the cast of ‘That ‘70s Show’. They think Pink Floyd is the greatest band to walk the Earth. They insist on capturing everything on a film camera. They refer to themself as an ‘old soul’ while pining for a past they took no part in making.

We want to categorise people, places and objects as things that are ‘known’ and things that are ‘unknown’. We want to identify the similarities and differences between them based on our previous encounters. Naturally, this leads to making judgements based on stereotypes—for better or worse. It is simply how we are programmed to make sense of the world.
