Self-love doesn’t always mean bubble-baths, clean eating and face masks. Self-love is simply a form of self-improvement, which at times can be uncomfortable. I’ve got four pieces of advice shared by fellow Monash students on the messy side of self-love.

All over the world, veganism is on the rise. In the UK, the number of vegans has increased by 350% in the past decade while 11% of Australians don’t consume meat or dairy products. Yet when we look at headlines, clickbait posts and YouTube videos we see: ‘After being vegan for three years, I went back to meat,’ ‘Vegan Youtuber caught eating fish’ and ‘Apology video: why I’m no longer vegan.’

Okay, let’s admit it. Being good to the planet is damn hard. We’ve grown up in a consumerist society that normalises—no, encourages—spending. We’ve become so accustomed to that instant buzz of buying new, shiny things.

Not too long ago, I came across an Instagram post of a well-known Australian influencer and travel blogger with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram. She had posted several pictures of herself in a lehenga, an Indian garment usually worn on formal or ceremonial occasions, and a variety of Indian jewellery. She posed in front of the famous and historic forts of Jaipur, Rajasthan (which happens to be my birthplace).
